On a less joyful but eminently more American note, Goodreads, which used to allow writers to give away their books for “free” (though authors still have to buy their books and mail them,) is now charging a minimum of $119 to give away books. It’s a common misconception that writers get their own books for free, whether self-published or traditionally published, writers never get more than a few free books.
