I did a little reading from my novel, Gods and Monsters, at the Backstory Bookshop. It was a lot of fun.

God and Monsters is now on the recommended reading list for the Nebula awards. If you are a science-fiction writer, you will say, “Wow!” If you’re not a science-fiction writer you will say, “What?”
Long Lost Friend, Andrea Goyan and I are going to be interviewing Larry W. Moore, the head of Broadstone Books, who is the publisher of, An Illegal Feast, on Long Lost Friends on what happens to be his birthday! It will be fun.
I haven’t done any theatre in a long, long time; however, I heard about an English theatre company, Blue Book Theater, that was holding auditions for “Hand to God.” I got cast as the lead! Hand to God, is a hilarious dark comedy about a widow who runs a sock puppet group for Jesus and her son’s demonically possessed sock puppet. She ends up having rather violent sex with one of her students. I go from saying, “Do you love Jesus?” to “Bite me!” in a few pages. I am amazed at how many people have said, “So they’re casting true to type.” I have smartass friends.
And now that moment you have all been waiting for… Weird Catalonian Customs!
On June 23, I’m going down to the beach to have a picnic around a bonfire with some friends. But it won’t just be me and my friends. There will be bonfires all over the beach, and people dancing and jumping over burning fires or puppets! (I seem to have a puppet theme in my newsletter this month.)

You write down all your bad memories and throw them into the fire! People jump in the waves! It’s a party! It’s Sant Joan!
As with many holidays, it originates with the pagans.
As happened with many festivities, the Christians took over and decided to adopt/ borrow/steal this holiday. It now celebrates the birth of John the Baptist, though there doesn’t seem to be any connection.
